Jazz On The Cliffe with Rosie Brown

Rosie Brown was born and brought up in Hucknall, the fifth of six children. She moved the forty miles to Sheffield to study English and Drama at the University, and began singing whilst a student there. She started to act in plays, but found she was more comfortable delivering songs than prose. Her earliest public performances were at Sheffield's Casablanca club, a proving ground for many Sheffield musicians where the proprietors are happy to let people play whatever they want to.

She came to jazz relatively late, when her interest was sparked by hearing Nina Simone records played at the end of the night at techno clubs. What really converted her, though, was hearing Miles Davis's Kind of Blue. Amongst her other influences Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Carmen Macrae, Shirley Horn, Cassandra Wilson and Keith Jarrett loom large, but she is also deeply interested in Brazilian music, particularly that of the Jobim, singer-songwriter Joyce, and Ivan Lins. She worked in Brazil in 2002 and 2003, recording with singer Maria Perera Butcher.
